Just another day at the beach
August 22, 2012 at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. He was dressed in his trendiest white dress shirt and shorts, she was wearing a bright orange summer dress that could make many heads turn. They made reservations at Dune, a posh restaurant overlooking the beach where a famous scene in the James Bond film Casino Royale had been filmed. Before they went to the restaurant, Sameer grabbed his camera and insisted that they take pictures of each other on the beach as the sun set. Sameer wants pictures? This was a role reversal because it was Lisa who always wants to take pictures. So they strolled to a well-cut peninsula off the beach. Sameer had brought a beach bag with him “to hold the camera and some towels,” he said. But really he needed the bag to hide the mini sound system he brought.
The way it was supposed to go down: They take some pictures, and then Sameer says “I have a surprise for you.” Then he lays out the towel, pulls out the mini sound system and starts to play a smooth Frank Sinatra song, "The Way You Look Tonight," (which has the line “your breathless charm”…a perfect phrase to describe Lisa). He carefully places his Sony camera on one of his sandals so it is angled upwards and then without her knowing it he sets it to record a video. Then they slow dance in front of the sunset while the camera catches it all. And when the song ends, Sameer says “I have another surprise for you.” And then he gets on one knee and pops the question.
As mentioned above, that was the way it was supposed to happen, but then at some point when they were taking pictures, a stranger was walking by them on the deserted beach, and he kindly offered to take a picture of the two of them. Then, at some point while they were posing for the pictures, Sameer began to fear that his original plan was too complicated. What if the sound system doesn’t work? What if the camera falls off the sandal and we don’t get any video of the proposal? So just before the stranger finished taking pictures, Sameer said “we need to take one more picture!”
“Um…ok Lisa,” said Lisa (if you don’t get the joke remember the role reversal mentioned above).
Sameer grabs Lisa’s hand and escorts her to the other side of the beach. Sameer is so focused that he doesn’t even realize that while walking to other side of the beach he bashes his toe on a rock and it is starting to bleed quite badly. Oblivious to the pain, he asks the cameraman stand farther away for the last picture. Sameer tells Lisa that he wants her to pose facing him. And then….completely to Lisa’s surprise…and completely to the stranger’s surprise….Sameer gets down on one knee. What he said after that will remain between them. The camera man realized what was happening, and thankfully he took more than one picture.
A few minutes later they eventually did have that slow dance to Frank Sinatra on the beach…while Lisa was wearing the ring.
Chucks and Blazers
When people ask how Lisa and Sameer first met, they kind of look at each other as if they don’t know the real answer. Because to them they've met many times before the 'real' meeting.
Chance encounter #1: About 10 years ago.
Hard to believe but at one point in time both Lisa and Sameer tried online dating. And to make their parents proud, they joined Indiandating.com. Sameer was naturally drawn to Lisa’s profile on the site, it was much like a story she tells in real life: witty, entertaining, and definitely not short on words. So he sent her a “profile introduction”….she accepted. He sent her an e-mail…she responded. There was almost a meeting for coffee….but Sameer must have been distracted by a Simpsons marathon on TV, and Lisa must have been distracted by a Beverly Hills 90210 marathon….because the meeting never happened.
Chance encounter #2: August 2006
Sameer attended a speed dating event on a cruise ship on the Potomac river, which was hosted by…..Indiandating.com (they have made a lot of money of Sameer at this point). Lisa, now working for Voice of America (VOA), begged her boss to let her cover the event so she could check out all of the hot eligible Indian guys on the cruise (that is how Sameer believes it happened). At some point on the cruise, Sameer told his best friend Sachin to check out the cute reporter with the pink top and the black blazer, and Sameer said “that VOA reporter is clearly the hottest girl on this cruise ship” (that is how Lisa believes it happened). At some point in the night, Lisa interviewed Sameer’s group of friends, but Sameer did not have his “A” game that night, so not only did he strike out with the speed dating, but apparently Lisa kept a short clip of Sachin in the video and then cut Sameer out of the video (Lisa swears that if Sameer had spiked his hair up that night then she would kept him in the video AND given him her number).
Chance encounter #3: December 14, 2008
The residents of the Midtown Condo in Alexandria come together for their condo association's holiday party. Lisa was on the social committee and Sameer had just moved in. Sameer walks into the party room, and Lisa, who cares deeply about maxium participation in the holiday raffle, pushes exactly four people out of the way (two elderly, and one was holding a baby) so she could be the first to greet Sameer and say “Happy Holidays!!! Here's your raffle ticket with a chance to win over $100,000 in cash and prizes!” (the condo fees must be insane in the this building). Sameer thanked her but gave her a “you're weird” look. Lisa wished him luck but secretly planned to make sure that he didn’t win the raffle because she didn’t appreciate the “you’re weird look.” But later that evening, talk turned to news, football, and pop culture, and Lisa’s comedy and Sameer’s sarcasm finally started to click.
So no more chance encounters…no more missed opportunities….these two lovebirds were smooth sailing from that point forward, right? Not exactly.
Sameer was smitten with Lisa’s charm, but like most Indian girls who are 31, Lisa wasn't ready to settle down. This led to some awkward and comical moments at the beginning of their friendship. When they first went out for dinner, he called it a “date”, but she called it “hanging out.” He dressed up in his blazer, she wore her most casual sweater, jeans and of course her Converse All-Stars (which for those who don’t know are the most casual shoes on the planet and when worn by women are specifically designed to send the “we’re just friends” signal). However, Sameer’s friends will tell you that when it comes to girls, he is persistent against all odds. So he still made sure to walk Lisa to her door that night, and he still managed to kiss her on the cheek….although her response was to pat him on the head. Ouch. There's a second 'hang out' story that can be summed up in 7 words: Sameer's apartment, steak dinner, Butters, and pepper spray. Maybe someday they will tell you that story.
And so began a great friendship, full of stories that showed the chemistry brewing between them. Case in point: for Sameer’s housewarming party, Lisa begged Sameer to bring Popeyes fried chicken, which she insisted was the greatest fast food fried chicken in the universe. Sameer, who had absolutely no opinion on fried chicken, declared that Kentucky Fried Chicken was the greatest. Why? “Because I like to push her buttons,” he says. And so began the great fried chicken blind tasting contest of 2009….which became a hit at the party. Of course Sameer lost the contest badly and as a result he had to walk Lisa’a dog Butters for a week.
And that brings us to Butters (the cutest freakin dog on the planet!) whom Sameer loved like she was his own dog which must have scored points with Lisa (he already scored points with Butters by feeding her constantly!:). And anytime that Lisa gets frustrated that Butters is (rarely) more excited to see Sameer than Lisa, he reassures her “Butters looks at you like Mommy….but she looks at me like I am a movie star…Matt Damon to be specific.” Lisa rolls her eyes.
So with all of their good memories, their personality connection, and even a mutual love for the cutest freakin dog on the planet, the stage was set for a scene straight out of romantic comedy in June of 2011. It was Sameer’s birthday, and he was celebrating at Barcode, which was a popular place for Indians in DC to go party. Even though Lisa HATED going to big Indian parties, it was Sameer’s birthday and she cared enough about him to ditch the Converse All-Stars, put on some high heel shoes, and head to the club! “She looked hot!” Sameer will tell you. “He spiked his hair that night…I’m a sucker for that,” Lisa will tell you. The music was deafeningly loud, so there wasn’t a lot of conversation between them that night. But there was a lot of eye contact, some crazy dance moves, and maybe a “few” cocktails exchanged between them…and that was enough to get the romantic connection to finally click. And they have been happily dating ever since!
Oh and in case you're wondering, Sameer did end up winning something in that raffle. :)
